AIA-NJ awards ikon.5 architects with merit award

MORRISTOWN, NJ — The New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NJ) has honored Princeton, NJ–based architectural firm ikon.5 Architects with a merit award in the interior architecture category in recognition of its design of the Schindler Elevator Corporation’s U.S. Headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey. The project was selected by an esteemed jury of design experts who called it “incredibly creative” and noted that its “use of lighting as part of architecture is sublime.”ikon.5 was enlisted by the Switzerland-based company to transform its office, built in the 1970’s, into a headquarters facility expressive of its minimal and precise design aesthetic of its engineering heritage. The company also wanted the design to embody its mission to safely and comfortably transport millions of people throughout the world with its highly sophisticated elevators and escalators. The 167,000 s/f building located in Morristown creates an environment of light and color that is both dynamic and minimal. Program spaces, including a conference room, training center, corporate dining room and lobby are designed as art installations that employees and visitors can walk through and experience as three-dimensional constructs. “We worked closely with Schindler Elevator Corporation to ensure that our design would mesh perfectly with its corporate philosophy,” said Joseph Tattoni, FAIA, principal of ikon.5 architects. “We take pride in this award, which recognizes the meticulous care we took in this unique design.” The building also employs a series of design measures to reduce energy consumption including: photo-optic lighting controls for daylight dimming, LED lighting fixtures, recyclable carpet tiles, roof-mounted photovoltaic cells and low water consumption fixtures.“The renovations are simply mesmerizing,” said Kimberly Bunn, AIA, president of AIA-NJ. “The creative uses of lighting and color create an exceptionally natural feel in the building, something seldom seen in today’s office spaces. ikon.5 Architects is truly deserving of this Merit Award.”
