City of Alexandria Greenlights Plans to Create 640 Units of Much-Needed Affordable and Market Rate Rental Apartments and For-Sale Townhomes

BETHESDA, MD – JBG SMITH announced it has received approval from the City of Alexandria for its plans to develop 640 new rental apartments and for-sale townhomes in Potomac Yard.
JBG SMITH’s development plan, which includes more than 30,000 square feet of open space and 13,000 square feet of retail, responds to the region's pressing demand for quality housing near mass transit. The approved proposal encompasses a mix of affordable and market-rate residences across four vacant parcels adjacent to the Potomac Yard Metro station.
On Landbay G Parcels E & B, JBG SMITH plans to develop 432 units (480,533 square feet) of market-rate apartments across a 7-story building.
On Landbay G Parcel G, JBG SMITH has selected Wesley Housing to deliver 88 units (108,269 square feet) of dedicated affordable housing in predominantly family-sized two- and three-bedroom units across a 6-story building built on land donated by JBG SMITH.
On Landbay H, JBG SMITH has selected Toll Brothers, Inc. to build 120 single-family townhome units (316,800 square feet).
“We're grateful to the community, Alexandria City staff, and City Council for their collaboration and input, which molded this plan into the strongest possible outcome,” said Taylor Lawch, Co-Head of Development at JBG SMITH. “This mixed-use development is designed to bring much needed rental, affordable, and family-friendly for-sale housing to the neighborhood, culminating a quarter century of development in the southern portion of Potomac Yard.”
Potomac Yard has benefitted from an infusion of public and private investment in recent years to facilitate the neighborhood’s long-term development. Anchored in part by Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus, which opened its first academic building in 2025, Potomac Yard is also close to Reagan National Airport and Amazon’s HQ2.
