Best of 2018: The Best Engineering Project

T. Thomas Fortune House-Red Bank, NJ

Type of project: Historic Restoration GFA:3,150 SF The T. Thomas Fortune House is one of two National Historic Landmarks in the State of New Jersey that is significant to African American history. Built in the 1800’s in the Borough of Red Bank, NJ, it was the home of T. Thomas Fortune, who was born a slave and became a journalist, civil rights activist, writer, editor and publisher. The structure was abandoned in 2006 and quickly started to deteriorate. FPA provided structural and civil engineering services to Roger Mumford Homes (RMH), who undertook the restoration. RMH completed the restoration and deeded the structure to the T. Thomas Fortune Foundation, where the structure will be used as a cultural Center honoring Mr. Fortune’s Legacy.
